Daydreamer

What do we do with all of our ideas? Especially when there are "too many"?

Often, we are encouraged to narrow our focus, choose one idea, or fixate on something smaller. But I have a special little friend who showed me another way. Each morning, I step out of my front steps to find a little head looking back at me. I bend down to say hi, and he looks up, blinks his eyes, and runs like mad towards my car. I guess he wants to catch a ride.

And this is how we are—both in and out of the bush —we play games.

Sometimes when he thinks I'm not looking, I catch him sitting on a rock looking up at the clouds.

What are you doing, little guy? Looking at the clouds? Daydreaming?

He reminded me of my first semester at graduate school. I was part of a unique program that allowed us to design our curriculum. The idea was that other disciplines and ideas influenced our art. If we examine our influences while creating art, it will enhance our practice. Naturally, I had many ideas. Too many!

But instead of trying to narrow my focus, I allowed it to expand and grow even bigger. I allowed myself to wander. And the funny thing is that, even many years after graduating, I have accomplished everything on that list of things I wanted to do.

Ideas don't need to shrink. They can flow like clouds. They can expand, change shape, and morph into new ones. With time and action, they will transform into even better ideas, leading to a brighter, more creative future.

So, the next time you have lots of ideas, be like my friend. Look up at the clouds and let them flow. Let them be free.
