Pi first got the idea for “The Deck of Mirrors” when she was working on her MFA at Goddard College. She was studying Jungian psychology and how the archetypes relate to art. The process of self-reflection and unpacking the meaning of dreams and symbols can provide so many insights and healing.
If we can do it in our dreams, Pi became curious about how a similar process can happen in our waking lives. That’s when the idea for the deck emerged. To create art that is rich in metaphor and symbolism which could be used as a self-reflection tool.
In the “Deck of Mirrors” you first focus on a part of your life. It could be work, relationships, health, etc. Then you pull cards. For each card you are asked a series of questions:
- What do you see?
- What do you feel?
- How does the image relate to that area of your life?
It’s amazing the insights and wisdom that emerges from engaging with art in this way. No two interpretations are the same. Like a mirror, we see ourselves projected in the art.
The deck includes 72 cards featuring Pi Luna's original artwork. The deck was also a collaborative project and the concept of the deck as well as many of the images were inspired by photography by Raven Siker.
